First Communication Report by R. Vanholder, ISN/Renal Disaster Relief Task Force (RDRTF), January 14, 2010

An earthquake of 7.3 intensity struck Haiti nearby Port-au-Prince on January 12, around 5 o’clock local time. Media immediately referred to hundreds or even thousands of deaths.

After contact with Médecins sans Frontières (MSF), it was decided that the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN/RDRTF) would send an assessment team, 4 dialysis machines, and a water treatment system. The assessment team (Stefaan Claus, renal nurse and Rogier Caluwe, nephrologist) left together with the team of MSF on Thursday 14 January from Paris CDG at 1:50pm.
