Update: ASN Haiti Relief Efforts

January 29, 2010

Dear Colleague:

On behalf of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), thank you again for your willingness to assist with relief efforts following the earthquake in Haiti. ASN has filed your information in our Disaster Relief Volunteer Database and appreciates your taking the time to respond.

Nearly three weeks after the earthquake, demand for emergency nephrology relief in Haiti is decreasing. Full-time relief organizations—both governmental and non-governmental—are beginning long-term recovery efforts. Continuing to monitor the situation in collaboration with partner organizations in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, ASN remains available to direct these organizations to available nephrologists or additional supplies if a need is identified. If ASN receives a specific request for nephrologists, the Society will contact the medical providers in its Disaster Relief Volunteer Database, including you.

ASN encourages members interested in sharing skills or providing medical resources to Haitian earthquake survivors to register with the Center for International Disaster Information. Additional donations can be contributed to entities specifically dedicated to providing disaster relief to Haiti, such as the American Red Cross or the William J. Clinton Foundation.

For more information about ASN's response to the situation in Haiti, please visit the Society's website or contact ASN Policy Associate Rachel Shaffer at 202-416-0660 or policy@asn-online.org. Again, thank you for your support of the Haitian people in their time of need.

Sincerely,

Sharon Anderson, MD, FASN
President
